Paleah Stores Ltd. a provisions store based in Embu had been under paying tax between the years 2008 and 2014 based on what they termed as bad professional advice. Through an investigation conducted through their bank accounts it was established that they had been grossly underpaying their VAT and Income tax. Further they had not maintained a proper set of books of accounts to support their tax declarations.
Following the assessment by the commissioner, Paleah stores Ltd went ahead to appeal with the Tax appeal tribunal in 2017. The judgement delivered on 22rd January 2021 by the Tribunal allowed KRA to collect Sh 9.3 Billion being taxes, penalties and interest over the period.
